From a geographic standpoint Sarasota is rather spread out. It covers a lot of ground and includes numerous barrier islands as well. It runs from the Gulf of Mexico to several miles out east of I-75 and from the Airport down to the start of Osprey. For this reason, people certainly refer to particular areas of town as if they were separate little towns. South Sarasota is one of these titles. One could argue where the beginning of South Sarasota starts but most would tend to think of it as the area south of Stickney Point or south of Beneva Road when you are traveling on US41. It usually would be thought to include the actual towns of Osprey and Nokomis. Some or much of Palmer Ranch would also come to mind for locals when they mention South Sarasota. It is considered to be a nice part of town as there is great shopping in this area with the Sarasota Square Mall and many other amenities and restaurants found here. There are numerous furniture stores and car dealerships in the area as well and much of it is on the newer side giving it a cheery and fresh feel. Quick and easy access to Siesta Key and Casey Key is a bonus of this area as well as its close proximity to Spanish Point and Oscar Scherer State Park. The well-loved Potter Park YMCA is here with its wonderful water park for children and Pine View School for the Gifted too.
