Welcome to the lively and cosmopolitan downtown of Sarasota, Florida. Once a secret known only to some fortunate ones who had discovered her charm, now a well-known fact by many across the state and the country. The world for that matter! Mention Sarasota next time you are in England or Switzerland and see how many have heard of her and are eager to visit, if they haven’t already.
While not a large downtown, there is still much to see and do as one strolls along the streets of this wonderful mid-sized city. There are restaurants of all sorts and many wonderful little art galleries and boutiques perfect for afternoons of exploration. After just such an excursion there are quaint and inviting pastry shops and coffee shops for a mid-afternoon pick me up.
Sarasota is known as the art and cultural mecca of the state and it is easy to understand how this coveted title was bestowed on the city when you see how much there is to be enjoyed on this front. There is the historic Opera House from the 1930’s that is home to the opera company that is recognized nationally for its quality and also home to the acclaimed Sarasota Ballet. Additionally there are several other theaters in the heart of downtown like the Golden Apple Dinner Theater or the Florida Studio Theatre that features full seasons of new plays and improve comedy as well as cabarets. The Van Wezel Performing Center sits right on the edge of downtown and is the venue for a wide variety of big name performers.
Also downtown is the wonderful bay front park and water’s edge area that is home to fabulous sculpture and great eateries. Selby Gardens is in this same area and is a fabulous place to spend a day appreciating the special botanical life that makes Florida so beautiful.
If you are in the mood for some shopping there are many choices spanning from the quirky little boutique to the traditional elegance of Brooks Brothers. There are card shops and toy shops and bookstores and antique shops and shoe shops and swimsuit shops and high-end kitchen/gourmet shops and everything in between. There are spas and salons and cigar shops and upscale consignment shops. There is a Whole Foods grocery store that has a fabulous area of ready-made meals that are both healthy and delicious.
Every Saturday morning several blocks are blocked off so that the very lively and popular Farmer’s Market can happen. What a fun time to see friends, take the dog for a walk and stock up on all sorts of locally grown fruits and vegetables and well as wonderful baked goods from local vendors.
Come and see what the fuss is all about. Discover downtown!
